I wasn't expecting to win, and I didn't, but looking back, I don't think I did as poorly as originally thought.
Everyone there was half a weight class and then some above me, and the first guy I fought was more of a blue belt than a 6-month white belt. I have a year of training, but no tournament experience and even I could see that that hairy-necked armbar machine was sandbagging a touch, what with the way he completely dominated anyone else claiming to be a white belt.
The second submission I lost to was the most ridiculous thing: an armbar from side control that I'd seen, avoided and escaped from countless times at the gym. After a rather long standing fight with some grip war and his freakishly muscular neck that prevented me from achieving an Osotogari, he half-took me down and I almost ended up with his back. Instead, he got side control, but I managed to get my death grip inside his Gi collar and start choking him a bit, and thinking that I had a leverage with which to work, I lost track of my other Can. I heard some guy on the side yelling "HE'S GIVIN' YOU HIS Can, TAKE IT" and I'm like "Oops." He locks his legs on my Can, and at first, it wasn't quite in, but with continued instruction from Mr. Sideline Coach, he closed it and I was forced to submit. Shame, too, since I almost had him back into halfguard.
The other 3 fights I lost by a margin of 1 to 2 points, due to the fact that I was so much smaller and generally weaker than my opponents that they were able to manhandle me from the takedown into a top position. AT LEAST I was able to completely foil several armbars, a handful of cross chokes and a triangle while fighting back and forth from the guard/mount before the time ran out.
Two interesting points: I didn't get sprawled on after either of my ankle pick takedown attempts nor did anyone achieve a "clean" throw or takedown on me. HEHE Shame none of my comrades from the gym here in Rochester were able to make it. That would've been cool to watch, since I'm betting any of the higher level white belts and newer blue belts that I regularly spar with could've taken the place by storm.
